French Nails 101

Having French nails is an easy endeavor to engage in and you have the option of doing it yourself at home with a few easy tips. Before anything else, you should prepare the nails well enough by cleaning it; remove any old nail polish and file the nails into shape. Not accomplishing this preliminary requirement will only lead to unpleasant outcomes where time and effort will surely be wasted.

To soften the cuticles, soak them in a warm water bath; this is the second step. Softening the cuticles is important because when you do French nails, you need to clean the entire surface of the nails including trimming off any excess skin along the sides of the nail plate. If you decide to trim the edges of the nail without softening the cuticle first, better watch out because it is highly possible that you end up with wounds around your nails.
Prepare the cuticle by gently pushing the cuticles back with an orange stick; the first time you try doing this, you might encounter a lot of cuticle; simply use some cuticle remover to manage this. Different people may have different amounts of cuticle per treatment process and you need to take some time in accomplishing this process not only to get better French nails but also to avoid any possible accidents. Remember to spend an adequate amount of time on this particular step to make sure you do not damage your fingernails in the process of cleaning out the cuticles.
Get some hand cream and apply it on the fingernails; leave the cream in for about three minutes then wipe off any excess with a tissue. To protect the cuticles you have just worked on, hand cream is necessary; the hand cream also serves a second purpose of keeping the fingernails moist enough. After doing this step, choose among what kinds of nail polish you will be using.

Your French nails are now ready for the application of the color coatings; apply a clear basecoat to each fingernail and leave each one to dry completely. Applying a basecoat is essential in this process because it is responsible for the foundation of the final outcome. When applying nail polish, do not discount the fact that each coat should be allowed to dry completely before the next one is applied or else it will lead to lumps which do not look good.
When the basecoat has been allowed to dry, a thin layer of polish can now be applied over the base; a polish with a pale hue is often the color of choice here; one which matches the color of the nail. As what was done with the basecoat, apply the neutral polish in layers; about two to three thin layers will do perfectly; again, allow each coat to dry first before painting on another one. The last part of working with polish is to paint a straight line on the end of the fingernail to get the look of French nails.
Paint the tips to achieve that French manicured look; apply coats of white, beige, or any other opaque shade polish to the tips of the fingernails in contrast with the pale foundation. For the fingernail ends, the same rule applies; let each coat dry completely before another one is painted over it. Usually, French nails are done by painting a strip of white polish straight across the nail but you can opt to go with the natural curve of the nails when you apply the coats so as to make your nails appear longer.
Complete your French nails by applying a clear coat of polish as the final layer protecting the others underneath it. You can make the surrounding edges of the nails neat with an orangewood stick and a cotton ball doused with some nail polish remover. Again, allow your nails to dry for about twenty minutes to an hour this time and then you can start doing the things you need to attend to; the process may be long but the results will make the effort worth undertaking.
